The challenge

When Lay’s launched their global No Lay’s, No Game campaign with Messi, Henry, and Putellas, they aimed to go beyond the TV commercial. Creating a digital experience that would excite fans, spark interaction, and tie into the energy of the Champions League.

Lay’s wanted to take their global No Lay’s, No Game campaign to the next level by transforming a star-studded commercial featuring football icons Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry, and Alexia Putellas into an unforgettable digital experience. The goal was to create an engaging activation that captured the energy of the ad, while resonating with football fans across the globe.

It needed to be mobile-first, lightning-fast, and scalable to over 20 countries, all while keeping the playful spirit of the campaign intact. Most importantly, it had to spark real excitement in the lead-up to the Champions League finals, turning passive viewers into active players.

The concept

We transformed the commercial’s storyline into a dynamic, fully 3D runner game that puts fans in the shoes of football legends. Players can choose to play as digital versions of Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry, or Alexia Putellas. Each faithfully recreated in 3D to match their real-life personas. The game unfolds across three richly detailed, 3D environments: the sun-soaked streets of Miami (a nod to Messi’s Inter Miami), the vibrant hills of Lisbon complete with iconic yellow cable cars, and Barcelona’s legendary Ramblas, where Putellas shines for FC Barcelona.

Built in Unity and optimized for high performance, the game runs seamlessly in the browser of any smartphone, a rare technical feat for such a visually immersive experience.

This mobile-first approach makes the game instantly accessible to a global audience, without compromising on quality, speed, or style. It’s a bold fusion of storytelling, star power, and cutting-edge tech. Bringing Lay’s fans closer to the game than ever before.

The results

The No Lay’s, No Game runner game launched with a bang, rolling out across more than 20 countries and quickly capturing the attention of football fans worldwide. Within days, thousands of players were racing through Miami, Lisbon, and Barcelona as their favorite football icons Messi, Henry, or Putellas. Competing for a chance to win tickets to the Champions League final.

The browser-based 3D experience proved to be a game-changer, with high engagement and retention rates, especially on mobile. The seamless mix of gameplay, global reach, and real-world rewards turned the campaign into an interactive success story.
